Stockhorn-Augen
Beside the Stockhorn Panoramic
restaurant a 70 metre long tunnel leads through the rock
to a “grotto” in the north face, with two viewing
windows, known as the Stockhorn-Augen. These look out over
Thun and its lake, the Aare valley and the Gürbe valley,
across the Mittelland to Jura. Numerous information panels
explain and illustrate the geology of the Stockhorn region.
In the gallery a beautiful calcite crystal from the region
is on show.

The construction
of the summit gallery and the Stockhorn Eyes
T he project was carried out using conventional tunneling
methods, i.e. working upwards by means of drilling and blasting.
The original plan was simply for a tunnel of approx. 70 m
long, a cross-tunnel of approx. 10 m long and 3 m wide, and
two windows, each approx. 3.50 m wide. Various extensions
were then added during the course of the work, such as a cellar,
exhibition space, Grotto/apéro room and connecting
passageway. |
